Notice of Rulemaking

The Board has proposed changes to the Administrative Rules. A copy of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking was mailed to the Board's list of interested parties and may be accessed by clicking this link .

The Oregon Board of Optometry met on Friday, November 22, 2013. As part of its agenda, the Board discussed and voted on policy changes and administrative rule revisions regarding additional practice location and portable multiple practice location licenses.

Working to streamline requirements for optometric physicians, the Board found no other Oregon health profession that requires licensees practicing away from their primary locations to purchase additional licenses. This requirement appears to be a remnant from times when doctors were much less mobile than today.

The amended rules will become effective January 1, 2014. They will eliminate secondary practice location licenses and provide a portable multiple location license to all active licensees at no additional charge. This change will eliminate the $45 annual fee for additional practice location licenses and the $90 annual fee for portable multiple practice location licenses.

An optometristís original primary practice location license and portable multiple location license will be included in his or her renewal after January 1, 2014. Optometrists will continue to post their original license in their primary practice location. They may carry their Portable Multiple Location License to an unlimited number of additional reported practice locations. Additional copies of the portable multiple location license are available for $25 each from the Board, and may be ordered at any time.

Licenses will be printed only with the primary practice location address. Additional practice location licenses printed with addresses different from the primary practice location will no longer be available.

As before, Optometrists must continue to report each practice location to the Board in writing prior to beginning practice at that location, and must display a valid license in plain sight where any patient may view it. All licenses expire and must be renewed during your annual renewal period.

If you have questions, please contact the offices of the Board at (503) 399-0662, ext. 23.
